According to the EPA, government agencies spend more than $10 billion a year on energy, yet nearly a third of energy used to run government buildings goes to waste. The ENERGY STAR certification program is a simple and effective way for building managers to increase their energy efficiency and realize those savings while also showing their environmental stewardship. In 2011, almost $2.3 billion was saved annually, thanks to the nearly 16,500 certified buildings in this program.

Iredell County, North Carolina, manages 45 public buildings. Martin Perry, the Energy Coordinator for the county, was struggling to have a grasp of the total cost of utilities because it was difficult to aggregate the information he needed to see the big picture. By implementing UtilityTrac Plus, Martin can now understand the energy cost and usage across the county’s buildings. He also has a record to track improvements and see trends. The result is that the county saved over $10,000 on just one building in the last year. Overall, utility expenses have dropped by 15%.

Maintaining a healthcare facility takes time and money and it seems everyone always has to do more with less. Health Facilities Management’s article “Wages Scale Upward” shared the results of a survey conducted by the publication, the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) and the Association for Healthcare Environment (AHE). Over 10,000 hospital department managers were surveyed about trends in hospital compensation and the response rate was 26%. The results provided both good news and bad news. Surprised? We didn’t think so.
